Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Object Description Language (ODL) was the original interface definition language created by Microsoft for specifying interfaces to be used in OLE Automation. It was a superset of the OMG IDL. Microsoft provided a utility mktyplib to compile ODL files. The ODL was merged into the Microsoft Interface Definition Language. An interface description language (or alternately, interface definition language), or IDL for short, is a specification language used to describe a software component's interface. IDLs describe an interface in a language-neutral way, enabling communication between software components that do not share a language – for example, between components written in C++ and components written in Java.
