He played the lead role in the Telugu movie Anand, which won 7 Nandi Awards in 2004. Raja was born as Raja Abel in Vishakapatnam to a Christian mother from London and Brahmin father from Andhra Pradesh. In 1983, his mother died of uterine cancer and in 1989, his father died of cardiac arrest. His cousins Isaiah and Richard are also based in Telugu cinema industry. Raja studied in St. Andrew's High School, Saidabad (New SBH Colony) and finished his schooling in 1993. He went to Vikas Residential college for his Intermediate education and dropped out after the first year unable to bear the beatings of the principal Tummala NagaPrasad. He has two sisters. Younger sister Padmini is married and lives in Akkayyapalem while elder sister Vijaya/Victory is still single.
