According to the 1901 Census of India, the total population of Rajputs in the Punjab was 1,798,000, of which 1,347,000 were Muslim. Most of the Rajput clans in the plains of Punjab had converted to Islam, while those of Punjab hills remained Hindu. Punjabi Rajput are vast-holding landlords of Punjab. The members of Punjabi Rajput tribes are landowners and businessmen and they play an active role in politics and bureaucracy. In 1947 at the end of British rule, almost all Punjabi Muslim Rajputs of India moved to Pakistan.
