Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Shiva Smart Tunneling, also referred to as SST is a simplistic UDP-based VPN tunneling protocol developed by Shiva Corp. (whose assets are now owned by Eicon) for its Shiva series VPN gateways. Shiva Smart Tunneling works on UDP port 2233 by default, but can be configured to use IP protocol number 99 (reserved by IANA as 'any private encryption scheme'). Computer networks use a tunneling protocol when one network protocol (the delivery protocol) encapsulates a different payload protocol. By using tunneling one can (for example) carry a payload over an incompatible delivery-network, or provide a secure path through an untrusted network. Tunneling typically contrasts with a layered protocol model such as those of OSI or TCP/IP. The delivery protocol usually (but not always) operates at a higher level in the model than does the payload protocol, or at the same level. Protocol encapsulation carried out by conventional layered protocols, in accordance with the OSI model or TCP/IP model (for example: HTTP over TCP over IP over PPP over a V.92 modem) does not count as tunneling.
