Karpal Singh s/o Ram Singh, known simply as Karpal Singh ( born June 28, 1940) is a Malaysian politician and lawyer. He is the Member of Parliament for Bukit Gelugor, Penang and the Democratic Action Party (DAP) national chairman. His reputation as a lawyer and opposition politician has earned him the nickname "the Tiger of Jelutong," Jelutong being the parliamentary constituency he represented from 1978 to 1999. A motor vehicle accident in 2005 has since left Singh using a wheelchair and with neuromotor problems in his right arm. Born in Georgetown, Penang, Karpal Singh was the son of a watchman and part-time herdsman. His father had moved from Amritsar, India to Penang in 1921. Singh studied at St. Xavier's Institution. He met his wife, Gurmit Kaur while herding his father's cows. He obtained his Bachelor of Laws from the University of Singapore. During his time there, he also served as president of the student's union. He was barred from the hostel for protesting against the university's decision to mandate the "certificate of political suitability" for enrolling students. Singh took seven years to graduate.
