Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Zen master, or Zen teacher, is an umbrella title which refers to an individual who teaches Zen Buddhism to others, and it may be used to refer to individuals hailing from any number of countries and traditions. There are several terms used interchangeably with this title, and it is not necessarily used or relevant in every country with a Zen tradition. Until the Tang Dynasty, the term "Chánshī" (Dhyana Master) was regularly used only for a monk who was a master of Dhyana, and who specialized in this over Dharma (scriptural teachings) and Vinaya (discipline and moral precepts). In modern China, most temples belong to the Chán school in name, but also embrace other teachings as well such as those of Pure Land, Huayan, and Yogacara, often under the umbrella term "Chinese Buddhism"). "Chánshī" is used as a title of respect for a master, typically a monk, who specializes in the methods of Chán or general methods of dhyana. There are no official organizations to regulate the use of honorary titles such as this. "Chánzōng Dàshī" (Great Chán School Master) is a similar and more specific honorary term.
