For centuries, Hindus have worshiped and described God through the name and form of Shiva. Lord Shiva is the very embodiment of benevolence, kindness, simplicity and grace. Unlike other gods and goddesses within the Hindu tradition, Shiva does not wear jewels, rich clothings and so on. In fact, Shiva wears only a loincloth and have snakes and rosaries as jewels. Among all the gods and goddesses, Shiva is revered and adored for his asceticism. Asceticism is defined as renouncing worldly activities and undertaking physical, mental and spiritual austerities as a means to become closer to God. In Hinduism, asceticism has ancient roots and has been practised for centuries. Another major reason why devotees feel drawn to Lord Shiva is that Lord Shiva is 'asutosh', that is, He is easily pleased. Unlike other gods and goddesses, Shiva does not seem to want much ritually - just bael leaves and water are enough. More importantly, one can be a devotee of Lord Shiva (Shaiva) without having ever set a foot in a shivala...
