Henderson Jordan, as sheriff of Bienville Parish in north Louisiana, was one of six law enforcement officers who on May 23, 1934, ambushed the fugitives Bonnie and Clyde in a deadly encounter on Louisiana Highway 154 between Gibsland and Sailes to the south. According to his grave marker in Arcadia, the Bienville Parish seat of government, Jordan served as a Private First Class in the 83rd Infantry Division during World War I. He was elected sheriff in 1932 and served two terms, having left the office in 1940, when he was succeeded by his chief deputy, Prentiss Morel Oakley, another participant in the ambush of Barrow and Parker. As sheriff, Jordan succeeded J. E. Currie, who had served in the position since 1908
