It was established in 1996 in Cambridge, MA. Cogent provides research services to multiple Fortune 500 companies located in the financial industry, including Bank of America, TD Ameritrade, John Hancock, Aetna, Prudential Financial, ING, American Funds, Merrill Lynch, and Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. Since starting with syndicated research in 2007, Cogent Research has released several reports on the US financial industry. In January 2010, for the third year in a row, Cogent Research released the report Investor Brandscape; a study based on the response from 4,000 affluent investors in US. The report received a lot of press, as it showed, that Fidelity Investment had been displaced as the top distributor and mutual fund provider by key rivals Charles Schwab and Vanguard.
