Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Banda Oriental (in Spanish, "Eastern Strip") was the denomination of the South American territory east of the Uruguay River and north of the Río de la Plata, approximately consistent with the modern nation of Uruguay, the Brazilian State of Rio Grande do Sul as well as some parts of Santa Catarina. Between 1776 and 1814, it was a part of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, and afterward of the United Provinces of South America. The United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves conquered it in 1817 and renamed it Província Cisplatina. By the mid 1820's, the Thirty-Three Orientals led a revolution against its successor state (the Brazilian Empire), that ignited the Argentina–Brazil War. At its conclusion, in 1828, the former Banda Oriental was declared an independent state, Uruguay, by the Treaty of Montevideo. Uruguayana remained with Brazil.
