Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The Gymnasium, in the German education system, is a type of secondary school with a strong emphasis on academic learning, comparable with the British former grammar school system or with prep schools in the United States. The student visiting a Gymnasium is called "Gymnasiast".Public (state-funded) Gymnasien exist alongside those run by the Protestant and Roman Catholic churches, and those established by secular private institutions. Private Gymnasien often charge tuition fees, though many also offer scholarships. Some Gymnasien are boarding schools, while others run as day schools; they may be co-educational or single-sex, with co-educational schools predominating. Students are admitted at 10 or 13 years of age and are required to have completed four to six years of Grundschule (primary education). In most cases admission is nominally dependent on a letter of recommendation written by a teacher.
