She has instructed a course entitled "Writing about Popular Music" at New York University since 2010. Johnston was a founding editor of Gawker Media's Idolator from September 2006, through its acquisition by Buzznet in April 2008, until November 2009. Before taking up her current position in April 2011, she was a lead contributor at Popdust.com.
