There is no internationally accepted method for management effectiveness evaluation (MEE) of a Marine Protected Area (MPA). This book describes a new and comprehensive mixed-approach method for MEE that was trialed at Socotra Island MPA in Yemen as a case study. The method combined two broad approaches for the MEE: a review of literature and a community survey. It is a valuable evaluation strategy because it can provide a thorough understanding of how effectively an MPA is managed. Earlier methods are less effective because they do not focus on collecting robust data on activities of management authorities or use multiple indicators to investigate satisfaction, awareness and perception of a wide range of stakeholders from different areas as used in the study. Further, these methods do not consider aligning community preferences for improving MPA management with government’s priorities, which is a new approach developed in the mixed-approach method. Adoption of this new method will contribute to progress in the MEE of MPAs globally.
