Periodontal disease is a group of illnesses located in the gums and other dental supporting structures (periodontal ligament, cementum and alveolar bone) caused by accumulation of microorganisms that form what is called dental plaque, a chronic inflammation of the gingiva and connective tissue leading to destruction of the tooth supporting tissues, including alveolar bone, and may eventually result in tooth loss. This book describes the role of isolated different human herpesviruses in periodontitis and their correlation with pocket depth as well as different parameters.
