Over the past years there has been an escalation in
foster care placements and parents being accused of
abusing and or neglecting their child or children.
In most of the cases substance use was identified as
the primary contributing factor. This book examined
the differences in parenting styles between
substance abusing parents and non-substance abusing
parents. This quantitative study determined if there
was a significant difference in styles of parenting
between both groups.
The study consisted of (151) female
participants, 76 (substance abusers) and 75 (non-
substance abusers). Each participant completed a
questionnaire consisting of 4 scales.
The rationale and purpose of this book is to
provide empirical data and more insight for
professionals in the social service, human service
and child welfare field regarding the association
between parenting styles and substance abuse. This
book therefore, is to help identify potential at
risk families and provide the appropriate
interventions, to help minimize the risk of harm to
a child, while reducing foster care placement.
