According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.5 square miles of which, 2.4 square miles of it is land and 0.1 square miles of it is water. Just outside of Union Dale is the North Knob of Elk Mountain. It is the highest point in Eastern Pennsylvania and in the Allegheny Plateau.
