Son of Pat and grandson of Tim, both League of Ireland referees, Alan began as a professional in 2002 when he was selected to referee at the UEFA U-17 Championship 2002 where he refereed 3 group stage matches and the semi-finals between Spain and France. He refereed his first UEFA Champions League qualifying round in a match between Tirana and Dinamo Tbilisi FC in the 1st qualifying round of the 2003-04 season. In 2006 Kelly sent off 5 Russian players in an U-21 match against Denmark. Kelly refereed his first senior international in the FIFA World Cup 2006 Qualifying in a game between Estonia and Luxembourg, Later that year he refereed in a UEFA Cup group stage match between Shakhtar Donetsk and PAOK. In 2008 & 2009 he refereed in the UEFA Cup round of 32.
